Tips for Moving Across the Country | General

Moving across the country is not an easy task, from packing and coordinating the move to settling into your new home there are many steps to take to plan a long-distance move. We’ve put together a few tips to make the move feel a little less daunting.

1.Make a checklist – this may come easy for people who love to make lists, but if you are somebody who makes lists in your head, we suggest you write this one down and make a list of all the things that need to be done. Things to include on your list are to find a moving company, cancel your existing home subscriptions and sign up for new ones at the new house. If you are moving with kids, research schools in the area, find activities for kids to do in the car.

2.Find a moving company – it is often best to get at least four quotes to compare with. Read reviews about companies and speak to others who can give you personal recommendations.

3.Lighten the load – moving companies charge you with how heavy your load is or how many boxes you have – it is a good idea to donate unwanted items and sell stuff off market place that can easily be replaced when you have settled down.

4.Document the items you are moving – ensure you have a list, or write on the box the contents of each box. This will help with unpacking on the other side. It is a good idea to put essentials you may need on the first night to have them readily available.

5.Consider moving insurance – things happen and it would be beneficial to have your contents insured in the unlikely event something happens.

6.Ask the driver for his contact number – this will help you communicate directly with the driver and not with the company, and give you peace of mind about the location of your belongings.

7.Pack a moving day essentials bag – keep this bag with you throughout the move, it should have all the essentials like medication, toiletries, chargers, and the like. It is also a good idea to let your kids pack one for themselves for all there bits and bobs to help them feel more at ease.

Moving can be daunting, but just take it one step at a time.
